Can you be yourself and be successful ?

It depends

It depends on how you define success.

The dictionary says success is ‘the accomplishment of an aim or goal’. At work, it often means climbing the ladder, earning more, and having more responsibility.

As a woman, I’ve experienced this type of success. I’ve dealt with self-doubt, the glass ceiling, and worries about maternity leave I never took. I’ve heard people snarl ‘hungry for success’ behind women’s backs.

Many women, especially of my generation, have felt pressure to succeed in their personal lives too—getting married and having children—while also breaking the glass ceiling. I’ve been asked if I was ‘one of those career girls’ when personal success didn’t come my way.

If you’re chasing a traditional or someone else’s idea of success that doesn’t align with what you truly want, you probably won’t be yourself.

WE NEED TO BROADEN AND REDEFINE WHAT SUCCESS MEANS

This isn’t about lowering our standards but about redefining success to include our whole lives and desires.

It’s about finding a meaningful definition that works for you. For me, success means having a sense of purpose, making a positive impact on something I’m passionate about, and having harmony in my life—time to recharge, be creative, and be stress-free. Others might define success by accomplishments or legacy.

Take time to rethink who you are and what you value. Look at your whole life. What is success for you?

If you aim for a definition of success that YOU have defined, you’ll likely be yourself and feel your life aligns with who you are.

Feel good while you succeed. I haven’t been as happy as I am today.
